Planning your studies in Jordan
Many of the official Jordanian websites are available only in Arabic, however, a number of English pages can be pieced together to provide an overall picture of studying and living in Jordan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs website is a good place to start.

The University of Jordan has its own Day Care Facility to cater for children in the 3-8 yrs age group. The Centre is open from 07:30-17:30 Sunday to Thursday and charges only nominal fees.

The higher education sector in Jordan is of good quality, stable, well-funded and well-resourced. Many universities in Jordan are associated with American and English universities.

Fees and funding
International students are generally charged course fees by Jordanian institutions; however, this will depend on any agreement with the student’s home institution and the nature of the student’s international study experience.
The International Office of your home institution will be able to provide you with information regarding whether or not they have an exchange agreement with a Jordanian institution.
Scholarships
The availability of scholarships from Jordanian universities is entirely dependent on individual university policies. Some universities offer international students a discount on tuition fees if they are offered work with their host faculty. Others offer scholarships to distinguished graduate students only and cover 50% of tuition fees.
Please liaise directly with the International Office of your intended host university to discuss fees and funding matters, including availability of scholarships.
Studying in English
In Jordanian universities both Arabic and English are used, with Arabic more common in the humanities and social sciences and English frequently used in science and technology programs. In the community colleges (vocational colleges), Arabic is more commonly used

There are over 55 vocational and technical institutions in Jordan, commonly referred to as “community colleges”. The majority of these colleges are private and fall under the auspices of the Ministry of Labour/Technical and Vocational Education. Living in Jordan
Costs and Budgeting
International students need between AUD500 and AUD900 per month to cover living costs including accommodation, daily travel, meals and entertainment.

Managing and accessing money
The currency used in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar (JOD). Daily exchange rates are published in local newspapers. Foreign cash and travellers’ cheques can be exchanged at any bank or money-changer in Jordan; travellers’ cheques will incur a commission.
Foreigners are able to open bank accounts in Jordanian banks in either JOD or a foreign currency.

Accommodation
On-campus accommodation is available for women and would generally cost anywhere between AUD $200 and AUD $2000 per semester depending on the institution and whether or not the student would prefer to share a room or have their own private studio-type accommodation.
Rental accommodation in the areas surrounding the universities is generally between AUD $250 and AUD $500 per month, depending on the area and type of accommodation.

Health care and Insurance
Medical services are well developed throughout Jordan and medical centres and clinics can be found in every town and village. There are hospitals in all major cities. In the larger towns and cities, many of the doctors are trained overseas and speak English.
In addition, Jordanian universities generally have on-campus health services and facilities available to international students.
It is highly recommended that international students take out overseas health insurance before leaving Australia.

Conditions regarding Working in Jordan
International students are able to work in Jordan while they are studying. Jobs, however, are difficult to find so it is recommended that students contact the Australian Embassy in Amman for advice
