"Testing your skills in a new and challenging environment while seeing the world is an investment you just can't put a dollar sign on."

After completing his apprenticeships as a Refrigeration Mechanic and Electrician in Cairns, Ryan Maslem was considering the move to a major centre in Australia (Sydney-Melbourne-Brisbane) to extend his skills in air-conditioning and refrigeration controls. When he found out about the Queensland Overseas Foundation the thought of learning those same skills overseas in London was just too appealing! Here is Ryan’s story of success with QOF.

“In 2004 I started my QOF scholarship in London – I ended up staying for three years. I secured work with DWEC Europe. Professionally I learnt a great deal and my position allowed me to travel throughout Europe visiting Rome, Paris, Zurich, Moscow, Lugarno, Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, Warsaw just to name a few!

During my scholarship I was exposed to technology that are mainstream in Europe but which take time filter to the Australian market. I gained training direct from the Manufactures office and factory, the Building Management Systems (BMS) I was working with was the latest products in Europe and one of the Leading Manufactures in Europe.

I built a strong relationship with my employer, DWEC Europe, and have on my return to Australia formed DWEC Australasia with my past employers in the UK. I import Heating/Venting/Air Conditioning/Building Management System control equipment in addition to my full time role with Jackson & Jackson Refrigeration. I am now in the role of Branch Manager with Jackson and Jackson. I genuinely believe that had I not taken on the scholarship with QOF and had an overseas experience I would not be in my current position with the major share of DWEC Australasia. The fact that it also paid for me to see the best part of Europe was just an added bonus!

Another bonus, my work experience overseas even enabled me to meet the Australian Cricket Team. During a routine maintenance visit to the Royal Garden Hotel I met the team and got my ashes tickets signed and photo’s with the players!

I would highly recommend an international study or work experience to any other young Australian. Testing your skills in a new and challenging environment while seeing the world is an investment you just can’t put a dollar sign on.”
